Two Nurses Clean the Stairs of the Center Building under a large skylight.

The Missouri State Lunatic Asylum No. 2 opened its doors November 9. 1874.  The Hospital followed the Kirkbride plan built on large grounds to provide a safe haven for patients.  The staggered wings allowed sunlight into all areas of the building.

Nurses are responsible for cleaning, lighting lanterns, and bringing in coal as well as caring for patients.

The bottom portion of these stairs are on display at the Glore Psychiatric Museum n St. Joseph, Missouri.
