Churches

Churches played a central role in the lives of the families served by BF Graves Funeral Home, offering spiritual guidance, community support, and social stability during a time when segregation limited access to many public institutions. Preserving records of church affiliations helps us understand how faith communities shaped identity, resilience, and connection within St. Joseph’s African American neighborhoods. These details reveal networks of care—pastors who comforted grieving families, congregations that organized meals and memorials, and church traditions that carried cultural meaning across generations. By documenting these relationships, the museum protects an essential part of the community’s story and ensures that the spiritual foundations that sustained Black families are remembered and honored.
