Ruth was born in St. Joseph on June 29, 1916. She attended Central High School until her family moved to Kansas City when she was 16 years old. While in high school, in both St. Joseph and Kansas City, Ruth enjoyed participating in the theater programs. Ruth credits her love of the theater to her father who often took Ruth to local musicals.
